You can put the colours on a new layer, keeping the greyscale layer intact and letting you tweak it without affecting the colours. Just make a new layer, put layer mode to "Color" and then paint whatever colour you want on top of it.
Remember that sometimes the grey doesn't always let you have the exact shade of colour you'd like to have, so you may need to further adjust it with either levels, brightness/contrast or just dodge/burn.

Lovely speedpaint, it's already looking very interesting!

Looks very nice and dramatic to me. I want to try speedpainting too, but I think it's about a 100 years too early for me T_T; I have no clue on how to do it.

I like the speedpaint. You definitely got the basic shapes and composition spot on. As for the color, it's what Perynne said.

Though I kinda changed that to duplicating the b/w layer (hide the duplicate, this is your backup) and then set your brush mode to 'Color' and paint on the b/w layer. I find that the colors seem more accurate this way...adjustments may still be needed though which is why Perynne's method may be the better option.

I like that water pic, cant wait to see how you colour it.

I am pretty tired after moving my boogie body - phew - why were you looking at that in the first place?

wow, I love your art to pieces. I would love to get a commission...someday when I can afford it haha.

I really admire your style, it's the type I've been studying a lot lately--though it's honestly really hard just to pin down a style, especially since yours is very unique. I also like the liveliness to it, and it just suits Guild Wars. I really like your recent scenery picture too, the black and white looks really nice, and I like the brush work.

keep up the awesomeness : )

Good to practice with speedpainting. Were the rapids supposed to be dropping down on a small little waterfall?

Thanks Mina, I'll give it a look-through this weekend.

@Charlie Well, I was trying to make it sort of feel like it was winding. So the intent was to make it go from the left corner, and sort of hit a sharp turn, bowl up (best way I can describe it), and then go behind the rock on the left. It isn't clean enough near the rock for it to look like its going around; its something ive noticed from looking at it the past few days.
The opening above the turn, in my head, was sort of suppost to feel like it was open. Like, random portion of the cave is bottomless type of open.

I was originally trying out a waterfall in the centre and it wasnt working out, so some elements may have remained.

Ah, I think I see now. So you wanted it to look relatively flat, right? If that's the case, it's more of a matter of perspective. Right now, the view is fairly low to the ground so it looks like the water is more of a waterfall than a winding rapid.

I deffinatly see what you mean.
I adjusted the colours and realized what you saw with the waterfall. It looks like it just drops off in a rushed-hurry.
I'm not gunna fret too much about it since it was really just a practice paint, but i'll deffinatly think about it next time.

I've got the colour one done (if you want to call it that... LOL) but it's really just the same thing with brownish rocks and water.

i like the water though, it deffinatly looks more waterfallish now. ill post it when i can get it to load.

Here it is colourized.

Time to start my landscape for the contest. I've decided to go with watercolour paints for somereason... dunno. Just felt like it would work better? My piece is sort of light and earthy which is symbiotic with watercolours in my opinion. Plus i went to my local art supply store and got some new supplies (namely a new sketchbook, some mechanical art pencils, and watercolour paper :P)

Started my entry for the landscape contest ^^

Gunna try it in watercolours. I have always, always hated painting. I've never been good at it, but I wanted to originally do this image for a watercolour project in class.

The criteria was we needed a photograph of a landscape to paint, so I offered this up. I mean, screenshots are like virtual photographs right? She denied it, saying "It's not the same if someone else has already created it" so I never got a chance.

Seemed like the time to redeem it And if it turns out nice, maybe I'll actually give painting a chance.

Edit: I didn't draw in the leaves around the trees (except a few) because Ive been told I draw them to shapely and organized when I have a pre-guide line. So i'm just gunna paint them in as I see them, rather than over the pencil. I drew in some of the plants along the hills, however.

I like the colour on the water and I get the sense of the water moving as you said, to me it doesn't feel finished though.

The landscape sketh is very nice. Did your teacher explain why a picture was not acceptable and a photograph was?

It shouldn't feel finished; I was just using it for practice. I didn't really have the intentions of getting a "finished" product. Just needed to test out some different approaches to drawing than I'm used to

I believe her arguement, which I can only assume was from a misunderstanding, was that she thought it was already a painting or similar idea. Since it's alot easier to mimic another artist's style from a painting rather than from a photograph, she wanted us to use photos so that we would have to use our own styles.
Although, no one really painted the screenshot. I suppose she thought they did. >.<

@Thistle thanks I dunno how much of the sketch you can see (I've got the clearer drawing so I can sort of make out the shapes and such) but I'm glad the shapes look right and such.

So many double posts Dx

Started the base coats. No shading or details yet, just colour maping.

Im in need of finding a way to make some ice blue paint. I mixed like, 95% white with 5% blue and i still got too dark a colour Dx

So sorry to take so long to reply, I was away for a few days.

Anyway, you've probably already figured it out, but it's just New Layer - > Colour. :3 And like I said in the landscape thread, your drawing is looking awesome so far! Wish I could help you with the ice blue paint, but I haven't done watercolour in ages so I really don't know what would work well.

Ah, the color makes a significant difference in how the water seems to be sitting. Doesn't look as much like a waterfall now, and more like a twisting rapid like you seemed to want it. The watercolor is looking good so far.

What is that, an 8.5 x 11" size?

It's quite alright ^^
Yeah, I think I like the New Layer -> Colour method better (Sorry Mina ). I found this way only changed the colour, where using the brush gradually diluted the shapes to the colour (which makes sense, since its just a different type of brush).

Huh, i think it looks more like a waterfall now O.O
But i do think the colour really helps. Which is nice to know if I work on something similar later on.

I'm painting on a 9x12, cold pressed watercolour sheet. I was at my local art supply store and was like... eh, might as well. the sketch book came with a few sheets (more than I'll likely use, but its better than it coming with 40 and only wanting a few). Then i gave it an inch border, so yeah. 8x11. I'm surprised you could tell just from the picture

Since I don't usually enjoy painting, if this turns out half decent (I think I'll actually try and enjoy the process ;p) i think I'll have to frame it. Or atleast matte it.

Thanks to my friend, whom I've been referring to as the Contagion lately >.>, I'm taking a sick day. Boo sick, hooray sickday. I plan on spending it working on the painting and playing guild wars, so theres a good chance I'll have another progress shot today.

EDIT: Heres what I've done so far today. Might take a little break to play some GW [if my internet has improved. it was awful this morning :/]

These colours are not nearly as rich as they actually are; so I apologize for my camera. I'm going to try and arrange to borrow one of my friends SLR cameras.
Thats how much effort I want to put into this piece. It'll be my new gallery highlight... or something
